Hello Alameda,

I’m thrilled to introduce myself as a candidate for AUSD. Meeting a community as dedicated and creative as yours feels a lot like the excitement of the first day of school, where there’s a fresh start and endless possibilities.

My journey in education began with a rewarding role as a counselor at Girls Inc. camp in Upstate New York. As an undergraduate at Stanford, I taught reading for four years at Shoot for the Stars/Eastside Prep in East Palo Alto, and since then, I’ve taught across all levels of education for 25 years. My diverse experiences have given me a well-rounded perspective and tools to help address concerns in a timely and constructive manner.

At Stanford, I majored in psychology and minored in Spanish and African American Studies. I hold two MAs—one in Special Education and another in Information Systems and Technology with an emphasis in Data Analytics. I also have three teaching credentials in Mod/Severe Special Education, Mild/Mod Special Education and Elementary Education(Multiple Subjects). One of my essays I wrote when applying to college was about wanting to work with students with autism and other learning disabilities. I’ve had the privilege of creating innovative educational experiences for this group and thousands of other students. I have coached sports and robotics, led students in creating a pop-up museum about Port Chicago and most importantly created nurturing and safe environments for ALL students and families.

I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute to AUSD and engage with this dynamic community. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or ideas. Let’s work together to make a positive impact on our students and schools!

Why I want to serve as a board member . . .

I designed circuit boards and electrical devices in high school. This is one of many reasons why I will always support hands on experiences in the sciences. I have raised thousands of dollars for STEM activities and experiences for students. Including, raising funds for the Robotics team I coached to attend the World Championships.

A school shooting at my high school in 1995 is also part of my why. Adults must continue to do everything we can to keep our schools safe. I started and organized a peer tutoring program during our advisory. The day of the shooting was the first day of the program which saved me from being in the cafeteria where the shooting started.

I have also witnessed and experienced violence against staff. I know AUSD has a strong commitment to workplace safety, I will work with staff to find ways to reduce injuries to staff and in particular classified staff.

“Creative, engaging and community building curriculum creates joyful learners.”
