Safe Schools

Promoting safe, welcoming and inclusive schools is the foundation to achieving all other goals for Alameda Unified. Staff and students deserve to work in schools that are safe and welcoming. The federal government does not require that schools complete log 300 to document acts of violence. Advocacy that I initiated helped to expose this loop hole and led to legislation making schools safer in CA.

Key Issues

Strong Academic Foundation

All students deserve access to curriculum that will cause them to develop 21st century skills. All AUSD students will be prepared to pursue a career of their choice. All students with IEPs and 504s will have learning environments that set them up for success. Building strong CTE programs and partnering with local businesses for mentoring and apprentice opportunities is something I look forward to promoting.

Center of Educational Excellence

Our financial health is directly related to academics and school safety. AUSD will excel in financial transparency, STEAM curriculum and innovative programing. I have witnessed an increase in enrollment and attendance when leaders launch programs based on the needs of the community. Let’s build an AUSD that has world-class core academics as well as music and arts instruction.

“We are the ones we have been waiting for.”

Mrs. Smith and other educational leaders had an idea to start the Nonviolent Group for Social Change in Schenectady, NY. Because of them I was able to meet Coretta Scott King and speak on the stage next to her to a group of youth from around the country. The training that I received in nonviolent social change at the King Center and in NY has since been shared with thousands of students here in the Bay Area.

In high school, I was trained by Facing History in Ourselves and was a docent for the Ann Frank Exhibit at the Seattle Center, where I met Miep Gies. I also was a member of the Hope for Youth Poetry Program at El Centro De La Raza. These experiences as a teenager continue to shape my approach to life today. Positive change comes from taking the time to learn about ALL of our students, families and employees’ experiences. I will work together with you to create and support projects that will have a lasting impact. I am prepared, experienced and ready to jump in on the first day to work with staff and my fellow school board members to further develop AUSD as an Educational Center of Excellence.

Nonviolence is a method that transforms, first of all, the individual once you understand it and embrace it. It begins with you . . .
